Don't ask why, but gaming consoles tend to find their ways into my possession time and time again. It all started about sixteen years ago, when a cousin of mine decided to give me a Sega Genesis. I'll always remember that - in modern terminology, heavy box of trash - as my first gaming console. It was fun... before it burned out. It's not completely broken, but I have doubts that it will ever work properly again. Still, feelings of nostalgia wash over me whenever I catch a glimpse of it in my basement.
Several years after the Genesis, my first "new generation" video game system found its way via birthday present. Sony's Playstation, the first of the successful line of consoles, was a complete bundle of joy, of course. I think that was the turning point in my life, when I became glued to television and computer monitors more than time spent with books and outdoor activities. Will I ever become tired of the Playstation? Maybe.
But that's fine, because a couple of years later, in a one-two punch, the Nintendo company finally became a huge part of my life. It was the latter years of elementary school... perhaps a little early middle school, that I got my hands on my first Gameboy and Nintendo 64. It happened to be a Gameboy Pocket, not a Gameboy Color. Maybe the $60 Gameboy Color was a tad too much then. And you know this was the reigning time period of Pokémon, when getting that last gym badge outweighed eating a proper lunch in the school cafeteria. But a couple of years later, everyone just matured and dropped all of that Pokémon nonsense. In turn, we moved on...
...To Nintendo's Gamecube. Oh yes, now we see the video game world becoming more than just children's entertainment. Now the childish generation have grown to be erratic teenagers with eyes of absolute scrutiny. Now we know something called marketing competition. There's Nintendo's Gamecube, which I happened to own several weeks upon its anticipated release. But oh no, I wasn't satisfied then. Some of my friends own Sony's counterpart, the Playstation 2. With the fact that I still own the older model, the upgraded console was pretty much too desirable to ignore. So yes, less than a year after I placed my personal Gamecube alongside the older systems, Sony's Playstation 2 joined the party.
Yet, you may ask, what about Microsoft's XBox? To tell you the truth, I was never a big fan of XBox. Of course, there's the highly successful Halo franchise, but I back then I was not a big first-person shooter kind of gamer. Other than Halo, I couldn't really think of any game titles that I was particularly interested in that would force me to pursue an XBox.
Moving along, you would think owning a Sega Genesis, a Playstation, a Gameboy Pocket, a Nintendo 64, a Gamecube, and a Playstation 2 would be enough for anyone. I tell myself, "Yes, that is enough. Stop." But no. Randomly I decided to upgrade my old, bland Gameboy Pocket into a Gameboy Advance. And as technology continues to advance, so do video game consoles. Just a couple of years ago, the famed Nintendo Wii landed on U.S. shores. As my little brother said before, "Every household needed a Wii." So my household purchased a Nintendo Wii. Surely, the brand new motion detecting style of gaming was new and innovative, so I honestly had a lot of fun with the Wii experience. But I need more...!
So I got myself a Nintendo DS Lite, a somewhat upgraded version of a previously released Nintendo DS. DS stands for "dual screen," with a standard LCD screen that shows your gameplay, plus a second screen that utilizes the - nowadays - common touch-screen capabilities.
As of early to mid 2009, my collection stood at a Sega Genesis, a Playstation, a Gameboy Pocket, a Nintendo 64, a Gamecube, a Playstation 2, a Gameboy Advance, a Nintendo Wii, and a Nintendo DS Lite.
There's more?
Yes.
I am proud to announce, as of July 3, 2009, approximately 5:30 PM EST, a brand new Sony Playstation 3 has found its way into my household. Hallelujah. To think that I can probably enjoy the HD video gaming experience for a whopping one or so months before I head back to Binghamton in the fall. I can guarantee that my little brother would solder the console to one of the television sets before he would let me bring it so many miles north.

Hurray to more video games. And people wonder where my laziness comes from...?
